Offline dictation is an architecture, not a setting

True offline dictation means speech recognition and AI text cleanup both run on your CPU or GPU. Blabb uses Cohere Transcribe (openly licensed) for speech-to-text and IBM Granite — an instruction-following enterprise LLM, not a chatbot — for cleanup. No audio and no transcript is ever uploaded. A cloud tool that streams your voice to a server isn't offline just because it caches results on disk.
No per-word inference bill
Cloud dictation is priced per minute or per word because every inference hits a vendor's GPU. On-device inference is a sunk cost — you already own the hardware. Blabb is a flat USD $4.99 a month, $49.99 a year (two months free), or $99 once for lifetime. The free tier is 2,000 words a day, forever, no card.
Verify it, don't trust it
The test for any "offline" dictation tool: unplug the network and talk. Blabb keeps going. Both models ship inside the signed MSIX installer from the Microsoft Store (MSIX), so the code that runs on your machine is the code that was signed and scanned — not something fetched at runtime.
30 days offline, then a one-line licence check
The licence check carries no content
Blabb makes one outbound call: a licence check via Polar, roughly once a day and at most every 30 days. It carries a licence key — never audio, never transcripts, never prompts. Optional crash reports are off by default and scrubbed of sensitive strings before anything leaves the machine.
A 30-day offline window
Once your subscription has been verified, dictation runs offline for 30 days before Blabb needs to check again. Planes, trains, dead spots, basement courtrooms, and air-gapped offices all keep working. If the check can't reach Polar on the day, dictation keeps going until the 30-day window closes — it doesn't stop mid-sentence.
Local history stays local
History is a SQLite database with row-level DPAPI and HMAC-SHA256 encryption, keys tied to your Windows account. Retention is yours to set — don't save history at all, or 1 day, 1 week (the default), 1 month, or forever — and one click clears history, saved words, and logs.
Into any app, including locked-down sessions
Types at the cursor
Blabb types at the cursor wherever it is — Word, the EHR, the browser, the terminal, the chat box. Four selectable input methods (global or per-app) cover the apps that normal paste can't reach, and you can switch method per app when one works better than another.
Works where paste is blocked
Locked-down RDP, Citrix, and VDI sessions that block clipboard paste still receive typed characters, because Blabb uses input simulation rather than paste. Dictate into a remote session the same way you dictate into a local one — see the Citrix & RDP dictation guide for the setup.
One honest limit
Blabb cannot type into elevated or admin (UIPI-protected) windows. That's a Windows boundary, not a Blabb bug — the same one that stops any non-admin process from sending input to an admin window. Run the target app as a normal user and dictation lands normally.
Honest about the limits
Not air-gapped forever
The 30-day licence check is a real outbound network call. If you need a machine that never reaches any server at all — classified work, fully air-gapped labs — that's an honest constraint, and it's worth a conversation with support@blabb.io before you commit.
Not for admin windows
Elevated and admin windows are off-limits for the Windows UIPI reason above. No voice tool running as a normal user can type into them; this is by design in Windows, not a gap we can patch around.
Windows 11, x64 only
LM-Kit.NET's native libraries target Windows x64 exclusively. Intel and AMD machines are supported; Arm silicon runs only under slower x64 emulation, so we don't ship an Arm build. Windows 10 17763 or later, recommended 22621+.
